Hello Joe, Having followed Beebe's development of the method over sveral decades, I think your idea might work. He originally used his idea of a small plywood pad (to hold the paper/notecard) along with a wrist watch. The only problem with your idea of just holding the pocket sized watch would be the danger of dropping it. Although I don't have any records of Beebe ever having talked about it, I would guess that he went to the 24 hr seconds setting watch was the problem of old eyes...And the fact that it's harder to make mistakes on the twenty-four hour pocket watch sized dial.
Your ideas and questions are making me think...good!
Cheers,
John
