Using "hack" as a verb

It seems fairly well attested - at least back in the 19th century - to use hack as an adjective, as in " a hack watch" (i.e. an inexpensive watch that one syncronizes with his chronometer).
Is is appropriate to use hack as a verb? As in:
- I hacked WWV using a stopwatch...
or... - I hacked a stopwatch with WWV.
It may be that either of the above options would communicate OK.
Or one is better than the other.
OR...it is the 21st century and we don't use "hack" as a verb. One might better say, "I synchronized my stopwatch with WWV."
