I can't comment on the Astra IIIB, not having ever used one, but I really like the look of the delux model with the bronze arc imbedded into an aluminium frame. Plus, Celestaire is a respected and reputable outfit. So you are well covered in that respect.

In terms of used sextants, I would avoid e-bay unless the seller is a reputable dealer. I would be loathe to purchase a sextant from an individual - especially when he indicates that: "I don't know anything about this instrument except that it appears to be working fine" (a common caveat on e-bay where sextants are concerned) or something along those lines.

If you are looking for a used sextant, try Robert E. White Instruments in Boston. I bought a used C.Plath from them about 10 years ago and have never regretted it. Ridge White, the proprietor, is a great guy, knowlegeable and easy to deal with. Plus they service and re-furbish all of their used sextants. As far as I know, they are one of the few, if not the only, used sextant dealer in the USA.

I look forward to a discussion of split vs. whole horizon mirrors. A bit of sore spot with me at times!
