I experienced failure of primary electronic navigations many times: engine out, LORAN slave down for maintenance, and gremlins. But back before GPS offered global 24/7 coverage, it was expected that anyone venturing offshore would have and be competent using multiple means of fixing position: sextant, LORAN, RDF, NAVSAT, even OMNI (especially in the Bahamas), and always, always rigorous DR. Now we have something soooo good, it has eclipsed everything else.
