When I've been a mate on various boats, I've made the duty person
calculate sunset using the Nautical Almanac.
We do flags at that time (more or less).
Of course, we use Google as a double check.

Wake up your phone and say, "OK Google". If it vibrates briefly, immediately 
say, "What time is sunset on May 1st?" Does it answer you? Though it seems a 
cheat, this is by far my favorite way to track the changing time of sunset 
and to decide when the chickens will be ready to roost. I don't care about 
specific definitions (sun center at true horizon, sun center on theoretical 
sea horizon, sun upper limb below actual sea horizon, etc.), and neither do 
the chickens.
