I've sailed on boats with only the traditional marking on the steering compass.
And even when there are both markings, when I'm at the helm, I'll often turn the course in degrees into a
picture of the lubber line against the rose. If you're steering agaunst the horizon or a landmark, changing
focus (the scan) is a lot easier that way.
