"However, maybe I'm a bit dim, but I can't work out why the Moon is round. We're approaching neaps in the UK."It's simply over-exposed. It's difficult to get a photo of the Moon that shows its features and phase and a sharp limb when the camera's exposure (an "auto" setting?) is set for the broader field of view.
The mars...moon...venus photo was an "opportunity" snap with my phone. If I had gone inside to get my camera venus would have disappeared behind the mist.
When I first went outside I saw an object in the western sky and thought "that is venus". Then I turned my head and saw an object east of the moon many orders of magnitude brighter. It looked like an aircraft with its landing lights on but when it did not move I decided that it was venus.
