The local maritime museum let me inspect a donated Troughton & Simms , London, Box Sextant made in 1918. Reading the vernier scale using the attached magnifying glass proved to defeat my best squinting attempts even with reading glasses. It is my opinion that this model of box sextant would not be readable underway on any type of water craft. I do have a x5 monocular that might enlarge the scale enough to see the very fine lines. All I can say is that the field surveyors that used these must have had 20/10 vision supplemented with lots of carrots daily.
Has anyone found a good way to read the vernier on these type of sextants?
