I have received one complaint this afternoon, which I basically agree with, and I think I will say that 'Veterans Day' is really off-topic. It struck me as a little odd when the messages started appearing this morning. We, as a community, do not normally celebrate memorial holidays of this sort. I checked the archive for the words "veteran" and also "memorial" in NavList message subjects through the twenty-year history of these discussions, and only found messages from today. I'll repeat that: there have never been Veterans Day messages before in the history of NavList. Those of you who posted your positive feelings about veterans today certainly should not feel bad in the slightest --not at all, but I don't think we should encourage this as a NavList topic. I attempted to draw the discussion in a different direction, closer to topic, with the post about the Arizona "sundial" but maybe that didn't work.

PS: I understand that some of you need more online social interaction, and as a bit of practical advice, I strongly encourage you to get on Facebook, if you have not already. It is an excellent place for general interactions and discussions. And in case you're wary, you should know that it's not "for kids" -- it's even a bit "gray". It's a great place to reach out to old friends and new. And yes, we even have a celestial navigation community there with rather different sorts of conversations, generally lighter and more visually-oriented. Many NavList members are active members there, too, and conversely there are quite a few active members of the Facebook celestial navigation community who never engage in NavList discussions at all.
