Bill, I really enjoyed your account of a voyage in Southern Seas. Did the junior deck officers show any interest at all in what you were doing?
As a one time navigator in merchant ships at sea in pre-gps or transit satellite days, the main source of job satisfaction was the navigational routine and position fixing, both deep sea and on the coast.
It seems that boxes (large steel ones and small black ones) have taken all the fun out of it � or have they? There must be something apart from money and good leave arrangements that keeps young men at sea these days�.
