Having re-read my speed and heading change calculations made several years ago, I find have great difficulty following them today leading me to the conclusion that post 70, grey cells disappear at an alarming rate.
One thing is for sure. To finish those Services exams purposely made almost impossible to finish in time available to add additional stress, the only solution is to train yourself specifically for that style of exam. The RAF Staff Navigator Astro exam was designed that way. Moreover, our instructor Capt Chuck Garcia USAF told us it was to be in Spanish, but that was just his little joke. Cautious navigators, as most are, take more time than they need, because half their brain is back checking their previous action, and a good thing too. However, in these types of exams, you have first to have practiced for hours completing the expected style of question at great speed, and then throw caution to the wind and force yourself to only go forward never looking back. You'll either finish and come top with 100% or finish but crash and burn. I did it for the said exam and surprised myself by coming top. Would I be confident doing that in real life, I doubt it. DaveP
