It has come to my attention that budget cuts for the National Institute of Standards and Technology may result in closure of the government radio station WWV, broadcasting exact time on short wave frequencies for some 90 years. Petitions have been circulating, generated by short wave radio and ham radio enthusiasts. I don't know if there are also petitions from other groups.
I will miss WWV if it is shut down. I use it every day to regulate clocks, watches, and chronometers. As a compass adjuster I need the time when I adjust a ship by the sun or a star or planet, setting my old railroad watch to the local time of the body being used. I realize that there are other sources of time now, allegedly, but I don't trust them.
To contribute to the petitions, do a search for "petition NIST WWV", and they should show up.
