Why would one have a Bygrave slide rule instead of a simple
electronic calculator (solar powered, full trig, less than $10)
that's substantially more accurate in doing sight reductions?
We're talking about GPS being jammed, not the entire earth being subject to some EMP that destroys all electronics.
But wait, most watches these days are electronic....

Or a flat Bygrave with a long term almanac, either Kolbe's or the one from H.O. 249. Attached is a photo of the complete backup celestial navigation kit including the flat Bygrave and the H.O. 249 almanac.

All:The comment from Paul Jackson regarding reliance on GPS brings the following to mind. The article was an interesting read.As Murphy said, Anything that can go wrong will. Otherwise, re ocean voyages, carry a sextant, add to that your favorite tables sounds like a good idea, the more one thinks about it, the better it sounds. Then there is the KISS principle too. A sextant and that favorite set of tables, add a quartz watch or G Shock if you fancy Casio sounds pretty simple to me.
