Working from memory so can't quote the source, there are "predictable extremes" for waves or some such phrase. The gist being that waves 50% larger than the upper figure are usual. What I don't know is whether this is factored into a marine forecast. 4-6' could mean average of 4' with predictable extremes to 6'. Or it could mean a range of 4-6' with predictable extremes of 9'.. But 2-4? That would be 2-3 if the average is 2 and predictable extreme is 50% greater than 2. So if the forecast is for 4-6, can we expect a nice threesome of 9 ft waves now and again? Saw that last weekend. Bill
