    It's very likely that they had them down for exactly the reason given
    later in my post:  heavier weather in the winter and spring (the photo
    was taken in March, if I recollect).
    
    These modern schooners may be more stable than those a century ago so
    maybe the shipping of these spars is more for authenticity than actual need.
    
    Anyway, I'll be interested in hearing the reason you get from their
    crews or other folks close to them.
