Thank you for the comment. So, the diagram is not exactly linear then, it is Mercator-distorted, the closer to a pole, the more the distortion? I.e. if I choose a square area with the same amount of degrees along the X and Y axes, it will/should become more elongated vertically, right?
The gnuplot is very powerful - provided one knows how to use it (which I'm not, alas, I have little experience with it, used it several times - with some success though).
