Hi Richard - I'm the article's author. While I have indeed seen some references to Weems meeting Lindbergh in 1926, I have reason to believe they are in error, as more complete attributions of the same account in the Weems family's papers describe the incident as occurring "several weeks before being transferred to the USS Cuyama." His assignment to that vessel did not occur until March 1928, though Weems was able to delay his departure until April. Looking at Lindbergh's schedule, it appears that early April was really the only time that satisfied all accounts for when they could have met in San Diego.
If you have further evidence of an earlier meeting, I'd be grateful if you could share it.
