I added a small graph with the results of the formulae I presented in NavList 4747. As you can see the length of 1 minute of latitude varies (from 1842.9m on the equator to 1861.6 on the pole). The average of the ten values used to create this graph is 1852.22, which rounded off to whole metres gives us the length of the nautical mile. On International Hayfor (a=6378388.000, Finv=297.0000000) the average 1 arc minute equals 1852.28m. The international nautical mile is defined as 1 arc minute on a sphere with a 6366707m radius. A little maths tells us that 6366707*PI*2/360/60 = 1851.999994m or indeed 1852m as internationally defined.
