What do you understand by a footstep?

I’m sure in my hill walking days I was taught to count a footstep every time I put one particular foot forward, e.g. left, left, left …., or right, right, right, whichever foot was going forwards when you started to count.  On level ground I’m a 66 paces to the 100m man and anything up to 95paces/100m on tussocky hilly ground.

I recently read in The Times that I ought to be taking 10,000 steps a day.  This seemed rather a lot, so I bought a digital footstep recorder to check how many I was managing.  I could have saved the money, because it turned out that there was already one on my new smart phone.  No problem, with two I was able to check that they’re reasonably consistent in their readinds.

I was amazed how well I was doing until I checked by counting.  100 of my right footsteps gave me 200 digital steps.  I realise these devices work on shocks, but you would think they’d divide the answer by two for dinosaurs like me.  How do other NavList members count their paces, right, right, right, or left right, left right, left right?
