Re: What is a good sextant to buy?

    Bruce P,

I have had the same sextant spill as you describe plus many others. Each accident resulted in a sextant box modification. My original Tamaya Jupiter box has modified corners, handle, and an extra latch. In addition to these modifications was a special hand hold that has the index finger holding the box lid shut as a last resort failsafe. Ultimately I opted for an aftermarket plastic seahorse box which works as advertised and is splash resistant.

    Abdul,

Sextant recommendations: Small craft - Tamaya Venus with Davis mark 3 for piloting. If space is available then go full size metal sextant. Take your pick as I have had good results with many brands made from 1970 to present. No one sextant is perfect. I like Tamaya optics, C&P filters, and US Navy MK3 M.Low ergonomics. Try to find a used metal sextant in mint condition and budget $400.  If purchasing new then an Astra is going to be your best value.
