What is a naut?

I was browsing a book called The Telephone Handbook published in 1942. In a chapter about submarine cables the word "naut" is used to define the length of the cables. The inference is that the word means nautical mile. The book tells me that a cable from Key West to Havana is 108 nauts long. Some googling tells me that Key West to Havana is 91 nm which confirms that naut means nautical mile.

Maybe I will add naut to archaic words I enjoy using such as long by chron and astro?
