Thank you both for your responce. Do the best fix that you can with the equptment you have. The closer to hazards the better it should be.
From other discussions on NavList it seems that sea state, size of your boat ( big ship ), horizon, etc. play the biggest role in a good fix and that most of the common sight reduction methods are up to speed. I also get the impresion that there no regulations that say how close you have to be. When we flew there were national and international regs that governed the accuracity of your fix and procedures to follow if you found you were off course. I am sure there are similar rules in a channel or port but not on the open ocean.
