    John H. asked:

Reading the posts it seems that if you go a day or two without a fix because of weather then get a great 3 star fix you will update your position and start your DR from your new fix.  Was the boat in danger or in violation of some law during the day of no fix?

John, I suspect you already know the answer to your question which is no, of course not. I suppose that having the time and the tools to get the best fix possible has something to do with it, so why not.  These conditions might not exist in a small craft or a biplane trying to find a speck in the ocean.

I once sailed (in a ship) from the English Channel to Jamaica, via the Mona Passage into the Caribbean.  We had overcast conditions for the entire ten days, hence no sights, but still managed to make a reasonable landfall with the late, scant help of one or two not very great DF bearings.

One important reason that comes to mind is the daily gamble on a passenger ship's run, noon to noon. ;-)

    Regards

    John
