When I was in Germany in the mid-1990's I was certain of the same thing:
that a German-made sextant would be less expensive if procured in Germany. I
was very quickly relieved of such notions as I shopped around in Hamburg. In
fact everything was much more expensive than what I could have gotten it for
in North America. I went into one second-hand nautical shop in Hamburg. The
guy was trying to sell what was essentially a piece of junk for about $1500.
It was an old C.Plath with broken mirrors, highly corroded and tarnished
parts and a scope with a bent riser.

For this reason, I would much rather deal with reputable used or new sextant
dealers here in North America. I'm not a risk taker. I like a sure thing
    where my money is concerned!

    Robert
