Greetings to all. I am a landlocked maritime enthusiast from the US and new to this forum. I am posting at the recommendation of Bill Morris after I wrote him with a question. I have recently come into possession of a rather unusual device that appears to be a navigational tool. There are three concentric geared rings, allowing the scope to move on all three axes. It appears to be designed to gimbal, or rest on knife edges as Dr Morris suggests. In his response to me he wrote, "I suspect it is a device to give a direct solution to the navigational triangle without using tables or calculations." I am including a few pictures for general perusal, and welcome any and all suggestions as to what I may be holding. Please advise if I can provide additional images or views that could be helpful.
