    When I tried to plot two circles of equal altitude using a simple square grid for the celestial sphere, my northern crossing point indicated Wake Is.  There’s nothing else for miles around.  Unfortunately, there appears to be only one church on the atoll, the Memorial Chapel, and it’s not the church in the photograph. 
    I was leaving plotting the southern crossing point and adding a third circle as a check until I’d glued more 5mm graph paper on to my original plot.  The problem with selecting stars with low altitudes is that you end up with large zenith distances requiring an equally long armed pair of compasses or a trammel.
