    Brian Killian:

Interesting that you should mention using a slide rule. If you mention them to young people today, mostly you get a blank look in return.

Personally speaking, given that my "navigation" is limited to standing on the beach, when I can get there, and shooting such celestial bodies as happen by, or using an artificial horizon in the parking lot of our apartment complex, I like the Nautical Almanac Daily Pages. I tried the NA Concise Tables, they struck me as a pain in the posterior. There are, of course, a fairly large number of different sight reduction methods, electronic and non electronic, so one can pretty much take their choice.

In the end, it strikes me that fooling around with a sextant, and whichever tables or routine one leans toward, try Celestial Tools by the way, is an endlessly interesting way to waste some time.

I have tried HO 229, but only in the most fleeting fashion. HO 211 is another booklet, yet unread. HO 249 seems popular with people, the late William F. Buckley Jr. thought it was at least adequate, as I understood, and I believe he knew from whence he spoke. Seems as if it just goes on and on. Enjoy.
