I went to Google's image search, and pasted in the whole picture. It came back and said Google's best guess was that this was: a picture.
This of course was not specific enough to be useful...so I cropped it down to include just the man's face, and tried again. Google said its best guess was that this was: a physicist.
...though it gave no rationale. Perhaps physicists were the ones who mostly posed for B&W pictures with pipes in their mouths.
