    When ''Boxing the compass'', like North, Northby East, NorthNorthEast, NE by North, we counted by Points, or 360 div by 32, never bothering about dégrées.

    As for the cardinal points, the only point that has a REAL meaning  is  EAST. EAST is where the Earth is  turning towards. The other 3 are just relative to EAST, that is left, right and behind.
