I am going with a simple explanation - as individuals, we think in terms of up, down, left, and right -> N, S, E, W. I left out forward and backward, which would probably be a bad thing to do if I was in space and not on the Earth.
(I think this is my first posting after lurking on this list for a long time. Thank you all for the wonderful conversations and the educational experiences.)
