Cave quaestione! This might be a ploy to tease out fallacies for subsequent squashing. It’s mainly semantics, but with all the acquired skill, confidence, and experience of someone who once rowed across the local boating lake single handed I suggest.
‘Eight Bells’ – Only if the Captain had decided that LAN would define the reference point for resetting ship’s time.
‘Position’ – Noon sight only - Latitude yes, longitude – would require rose tinted shades.
‘Rocking’ – Towards Sun – no effect, sideways – requires a certain amount of coordination as per Bruce Bauer. The idea is to get a ‘minimum maximum’ not a ‘maximum maximum’.
Most common time of sights – In those conditions, if you see it, shoot it, decide what to do with it afterwards.
Painting – It’s difficult to decide what’s what on the octant. At first I thought the telescope was pointing towards a second lower horizon mirror, but probably not. However, a telescope for a Sun shot in those conditions??? DaveP
