When shooting stars at night, and the crosshairs on my transit are invisible, I use a little keychain LED light aimed into the front end of the scope to illuminate the hairs. You adjust the angle of the LED to just provide some internal reflection inside the scope. The hairs become visible without washing out the star. Red LEDs seem to work best.
