If you want to really have the full theodolite experience, I recommend a Wild T-3, which is good enough for 1st order triangulations. If doing solar, you will also need a Roelofs Prism which combines a solar filter and conveniently creates 4 sun images, making determination of center much easier. T3s turn up on eBay with some regularity. the harder part is finding the heavy-weight tripod designed for the T-3.
