Hello all:
As some may remember (maybe painfully) , I used my Topcon theodolite for
measuring dip angle. For various reasons, on the average, my dip
data/results did not agree with the standard value. Nothing really significant,
maybe 5 - 6 % lower, but it still was interesting and fun to do. I would
set up in a beach parking lot and wait for the moon or stars to ‘pop out”.
I met many very nice people. Kids were really interested in astronomy.
Venus , Sirus, etc could be easily identified and seen by eye and
the kids were great. I recommend that you try to find a right angle prism. The
accuracy in position was quite unbelievable. I previously had determined my
height of eye for several locations so the set up was quick. It is truly amazing
to me that the NA has such precision as proven by measurement with a
theodolite.
A heavy tripod is required for excellent results.
