Autonomous vehicles are generally tracked by some acoustic device (pinger aboard the UAV and a detection array aboard the support ship). The tracking system provides direction and distance from the ship, and the ship is classically positioned by GNSS. These systems are in use since more than 30 years aboard oceanographic and oil& gas vessels and dedicated autonomous underwater vehicles.
Sometime an inertial system aboard the AUV will complement the acoustic positioning, in case of lost of acoustic link, and to take into account the attitude and the small variations in the trajectory of the vehicle.
