In preparation for my Atlantic crossing 2 years ago, I carefully rated a quartz watch (and backup!) so I would have an accurate source of time in case the ultimate happened, and a lightning strike wiped out all 8 GPSs on board (chart plotter plus various GPS chips embedded in phones, iPads, etc.)
Last night, for some reason, it suddenly occured to me that a quartz watch would probably be just as dead as the rest of the electronics on the boat, and that in fact I woud have been left without a single source of accurate time on the boat.
This morning, I am wondering, are quartz watches indeed a weak link in all our GPS backup plans? Should I be carrying a mechanical watch? Has anyone tried to rate a mechanical watch? I imagine they vary quite a bit, depending on state of wind, position, etc.
This is the only group nerdy enough to take this question seriously, and I look forward to various speculations and perhaps even some informed opinion!
Thanks,
