A nice set of illustrations.
I have a another hobby, flying large RC sailplanes. Your last diagram is a lovely illustration of how one knows where to look for a rising air/thermals given a sudden shift in wind direction and velocity - your single arrow to double arrow lines. The third vector you call the wind's true direction and velocity. We think of it as the highest probability of rising air and we try to get there with our planes in order to ramain aloft (unless there are soaring birds already there pointing out where it is).
