Winter solstice is the best time of year to do DSLR camera Sun observations. A 28mm wide angle lens with a field of view of 40° will give all day (including LAN) Sun observations above 27° north latitude. At my latitude of 34° north I get a few months of all day photo navigation :)
The best Lightroom 5 electronic dark room setting seems to be black and white high contrast blue filtering (see attached example) which gives very sharp horizon and limbs. Accurate pixel measuring in the paint brush app is thus improved.
