    You're pretty much exactly right. In fact, the principal error in your logic (I claim) is your assumption that the sun sets when it's a quarter of the way around the world. In the middle of the summer in the northern hemisphere, you're going to have to wait until the sun is well past 90 degrees past noon in order to see sunset. The time will be siginficantly after 6pm, and the azimuth will be well north of due west. (Also worth mentioning: no, the path of the subsolar point does not make a great circle.)
