Well... , I've used radar altimeters, radio altimeters, and pressure altimeters, but I'd never heard of a sonic altimeter. For those in a similar position, read this: https://archive.org/details/nasa_techdoc_19930081403/page/n123/mode/2up . Presumably the arrival of the radio altimeter made the sonic altimeter obsolete.
