I taught myself to use a sextant inland quite some years ago utilsing the Davis AH, I did become quite proficient with the AH at the time.
I now live coastal and have to admit I have never used a sextant in anger on board a boat, in part all my sailing has been coastal and the sun is to the north over land.
I do have a patio which gives me a clear sight of the sun for about an hour or so around noon and this arc of opportunity is when most of my CN activity takes place which precludes the use of the ubiquitous Davis AH in the summer months.
I have been practicing noon sight longitude timing sights up and down using the bubble sight tube and am starting to achieve some reasonable numbers.
It has taken some time and a fair bit of practice. One needs to be very still hence the mention of the aforementioned sitting for sights.
Still some ways to go.
