This discussion got me wondering. I recently did some research trying to find the standard sextant with the longest usable arc. I found it to be the Navy Mark II, with a usable arc of 145º. If my calculations are correct, you would be able to, albeit with difficulty due to the index mirror being just a sliver in the horizon glass, take artificial horizon sights on the Sun any day of the summer up to a latitude of about 41ºN.
BTW, I also have the bubble sight tube, and find it extremely difficult to use.

Yes, I also have the bubble sight tube, although I haven't tried using it much. I haven't even determined the correction to use with it. I have the same problem as you, running out of arc in the summer, being at 37° North. After reading your post, I think I'll give it another try, as well. Thanks!
