    Re: accuracy of Cook's lunars

    Hi, George -

She may have missed that day in class.   I did discuss the differences between octants and sextants, how many degrees they subtend, etc, and also lunars.   And, yes, I thought the portrayal of Cook and the octant bonking him in the eye that way was rather amusing.   I did show them how to use a sextant, and brought in my own and let the students take turns sighting.

All the students are asked to make videos as part of their final project.   This year's high scorer was a final project on the orientation of colonial cemeteries in New England.   The students used Google earth and visits to old cemeteries to see if they continued to adhere to an east-west orientation that is traditional in England.   Turns out the answer is largely "yes".

    Best,

    John

    John,

Aside from Cook holding an octant (instead of a sextant) at a really weird angle, I thought it was a great little presentation. It's nice to know someone that young now knows something about lunars! And handing in a youtube clip for an assignment - wow, golly, gee, times have changed!

I don't know if any of you lunar fans have time to check out this video by a student in my class, but maybe you have some commentary:

    youtube.com/watch?v=5VbEHgQDT18

This was supervised by a teaching fellow, and it came in *very* late, so we didn't have time to give feedback on this, just accept the video as is as part of their final projects.
