    Hello Trammell,

You state that there seem to be "some aberrations in the phone camera lens". Whilst an understatement, such distortion has been seen quite often before on NavList images.

I tried to solve your problem by numbers. First, by finding the scale (which I had to assume was linear) from the pixel and calculated distances between Dubhe and Alkaid, then using that scale to deduce Hs values for those two stars. The only position that fitted both, at your given instant, was around 53N 01E!

Your revealing overlay shows progressively increasing lens distortion, both vertically above Merak and horizontally West of Merak. How silly of me to use Alkaid, on the image edge.

I have since retried my method using Phecda and Merak which your overlay shows have little distortion. They gives a position around 59N 10E, quite close to where you were. That must be pure chance, as my pixel altitudes were just guesses due to the nearby waves creating an imprecise horizon.

Thank you for your fine photographs of the longship Draken - they made me look further on your website and social media. Very interesting - good luck on your future voyages and projects.

    Bill Ritchie.
