Check this out.

When I was in college taking a graduate math class in
"Measure Theory" I ran across this in a famous book
by Paul R. Halmos, called, need I say, "Measure Theory".

I quote:

  "The only necessary prerequisite for an intelligent
reading of the first seven chapters of this book is what
is known in the United States as undergraduate algebra
and analysis. For the convenience of the reader, sec 0 is
devoted to a detailed listing of exactly what knowledge
is assumed in the various chapters. The beginner should
be warned that some of the words and symbols in the latter
part of sec 0 are defined only later, in the first seven
chapters of the text, and that accordingly, he should not
be discouraged if, on first reading of sec 0, he finds that
he does not have the prerequisites for reading the prerequisites."


The book is copyrighted 1950, so the part about only needing
"undergraduate algebra and analysis" is streaching it by today's
standards. Notice also, the use of "he". No thought of a girl
taking this stuff. At least Halmos doesn't go with "one finds
that one", kind of language.

Thought the list would get a kick out of this.
