Ha!
As CN falls further into obscurity, even our common words are becoming antiquated. A "sextant"? What's that?
Even the objects themselves are becoming foreign. How many of us have taken an observation, only to be asked by a member of the public, "What's that thing you are holding?"
Funny story. As I was exercising the dip measurement with the circle of reflection, I was standing on a very narrow point of land and I just happened to be facing Plum Island. Plum Island is a tight restricted US Government disease research facility. As I was measuring the dip, I was approached by a dark SUV and out hopped two formally dressed individuals (government officials, most obviously). They asked me what I was holding. "A circle of reflection" I confidently replied. From the puzzled expressions, I clarified "Its a rare form of a sextant", and that's when I knew my day wasn't going to be as fun as I thought!
