Hi Dave,
I wish I could tell you more. I have one of these as well, it was sent by mistake for something else I bought online. With cost of returning shipping, it was easier to just offer the cost of shipping and keep it. They were made by Advanced Metals Research Corp., Burlington, Mass. sometime late 60's-70's. AMR made the Electron Microbeam Analyzer in 1960's for scanning ores. On the backside of the base is a sliding scale with marks for different periodic table ores. My thoughts are this worked with a beam splitter holding mineral samples for the scanner.
It is most definetly not a nautical sextant!
