Reading old ship's logbooks, you find that most often the sun is used for determining position. But sometimes you will find exceptions. Enclosed is such an example from 1908, where Altair is used for latitude and the moon for longitude. In enclosed document I have tried to recreate the calculations involved. Read the first three paragraphs and then try yourselves.
