Re: The future of eLORAN in Europe

There has been quite a bit of debate regarding LORAN globally.  Saudi Arabia combined eLORAN and DGPS MSK procurements into a single tender 3 years ago but has delayed the deployment if the LORAN infrastructure.  In the U.S., UrsaNav was awarded CRADA by the USCG for an eLORAN and PNT study/development a few years ago.  Given the wide spacing of the old 100kHZ loran sites vs the rather dense DGPS 283-325kHZ transmitters there has also been interest with the global R-mode possibilities as a PNT backup to GPS.  It looks as if GLA will also explore R-mode technology as well as eLORAN

The good news: there is finally some awareness regarding the vulnerabilities of all satellite nav systems (GPS, GLONAS, Beidou, QZSS, Galileo).  The bad news: a generation of navigators has been trained to stare at a screen and trust the utility-grade signals without giving thought towards checking for spoofing, jamming, system failures or multi-system mis-interpretations

On a personal note I would sign up to be the summer groundskeeper at the Martha's Vineyard LORAN oceanfront station!
