    Well, yes and no. Mostly no. They are a string of coral atolls, so only just above sea level, meaning that often the tallest thing to be seen from a distance above the sea is the tops of coconut palms. The Marquesas, by comparison, are rocky mountain tops that can be seen far out to sea.

    Coral atolls are thought to be the tips of land (possibly of volcanic origin) that have slipped beneath the surface of the water slowly enough to allow coral to grow up to the surface, and attract sand / vegetation / birds / passing Polynesians to colonise.
